Michael Beasley's first official practice with the Miami Heat ended quickly.

Beasley was struck in the chest by an inadvertent elbow during a defensive drill about 45 minutes into Miami's first summer-league workout session Wednesday, and the No. 2 overall pick in last week's NBA draft was taken to a doctor for observation.

Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said the move was strictly precautionary and should not affect Beasley's availability for Miami's five-games-in-five-days run through the Orlando summer league, which opens Monday.

"He took a shot to the chest," Spoelstra said. "He probably could have finished if it was the regular season or something like that, but we just wanted to be safe."

The Los Angeles Clippers will have to wait at least one more day -- and maybe longer -- to know for sure that they'll be able to unveil their dream pairing of Baron Davis and Elton Brand next season.

That's because the Golden State Warriors have responded to losing Davis to the Clippers by giving Brand a lucrative alternative to consider, urging him to relocate to Northern California by taking their five-year contract offer worth an estimated $90 million.

Strong indications persist that Brand will stay in L.A., largely because he explained his decision to opt out of the final year of his previous contract Monday by saying he was trying to give the Clippers some financial flexibility to strengthen the team around him. But Brand is apparently still considering Golden State's rich proposal.

Chris Paul's agent plans to travel to New Orleans on Wednesday with the intention of completing a contract extension that would keep the All-Star and Team USA point guard with the Hornets for an additional three to five years.

Lance Young, a senior director of the sports marketing and management company Octagon, said Tuesday that he had spoken to Hornets general manager Jeff Bower by phone and that they were in general agreement on the terms of an extension for Paul, who has one season remaining on his current contract.

"We seem to be pretty much on the same page," Young said. "A little tweak here and there and we'll probably get it done in the next 48 hours."

Paul is seeking the maximum pay allowable under the league's collective bargaining agreement, or about 25 percent of the NBA salary cap with 10 percent raises going forward. Such a deal could pay Paul from $60 million to more than $80 million, depending on the length of the contract.

NBA front-office sources told ESPN.com's Marc Stein that the guard reached a verbal agreement with the Clippers on Tuesday night and will sign a new multiyear contract with Los Angeles after the leaguewide moratorium on signings and trades is lifted July 9.

Davis was in line to make $17.8 million in the last year of his deal with the Warriors, but after telling the team that he wanted to stay, opted out at the last minute.

Forward Antawn Jamison was kept off the free-agent market with a four-year extension worth $50 million. The deal comes before Jamison was to become an unrestricted free agent.

Jamison traveled from North Carolina to Washington on Monday to sign the deal.

"I just signed. We got it out of the way," Jamison told The Associated Press.

What has been widely described as a shallow pool of NBA free agents got surprisingly deeper Monday night when Golden State Warriors guard Baron Davis joined Los Angeles Clippers forward Elton Brand in opting out of the final year on his contract.

The decision was especially unexpected in Davis' case, after strong indications as recently as last week that he would not be forfeiting next season's $17.8 million salary to become an unrestricted free agent.

But the move -- after Davis' camp made little progress in recent weeks in its attempts to secure a contract extension with the Warriors -- suddenly creates the very real possibility that the former UCLA star could wind up alongside Brand in a homecoming with the Clippers.

The free-agent defensemen pool, already shallow to begin with, is even more so after the Colorado Avalanche locked up blueliners John-Michael Liles and veteran Adam Foote.

The team announced the signings Monday, and ESPN.com has confirmed that Liles' four-year deal will pay him an average of $4.2 million per season ($16.8 million total). Foote signed a two-year contract through the 2009-10 season.

When Foote was dealt back to Colorado by Columbus at the trade deadline, the Columbus Dispatch reported that Foote was demanding a two-year deal at $4 million a year and had turned down a two-year, $7 million offer.

The Lightning and the unrestricted free agent agreed to a seven-year,
$31.5 million contract Sunday, ESPN.com has confirmed.

Tampa Bay dealt a third-round draft pick in 2009 for the short-term negotiating rights to Malone and Pittsburgh Penguins teammate Gary Roberts on Saturday. That allowed the Lightning to talk exclusively to Malone until the NHL free agency signing period begins Tuesday.

The Penguins didn't feel they could afford to re-sign Malone, who had 27 goals and 24 assists last season. The Pittsburgh native was believed to be seeking about $5 million per season.

The Wolves have reached an agreement in principle with the Memphis Grizzlies that sends the draft rights to Mayo, Marko Jaric, Antoine Walker and Greg Buckner to the Grizzlies in return for the draft rights to Kevin Love, Mike Miller, Brian Cardinal and Jason Collins.

The blockbuster deal for both teams wasn't completed until past 2 a.m. ET, some two hours after Boston made the 60th and final pick of the draft, according to The Associated Press.
